Concealed Carry/Wear and Carry permit

Obtaining a concealed carry permit, also known as a Wear and Carry Permit, in the state of Maryland the process for getting a wear and carry permit is no longer challenging. Here are qualifications that someone needs to meet in order to qualify:

  • You must be at least 18 years-old. If an applicant is between the ages of 18-20 years old then they may only be issued a wear and carry permit for work purposes. Otherwise, you must be 21 and over in order to carry a gun.
  • Demonstrate a Good and Substantial Reason: Maryland typically required applicants to demonstrate a “good and substantial reason” for wanting a concealed carry permit. Self-defense alone was often insufficient. Valid reasons might include documented threats, a history of violent attacks, or carrying large sums of money for business purposes.
  • Background Check: Applicants must undergo an extensive background check, which includes a review of criminal, mental health, and medical records. Law enforcement agencies will also conduct a thorough investigation into an applicant’s history.
  • Fingerprinting: Fingerprinting is mandatory, and the prints will be used for an in-depth background check.
  • Firearms Training: Applicants were required to complete a state-approved firearms training course, which included both classroom instruction and live-fire training at a shooting range. The training aimed to ensure that permit holders could safely handle firearms.
  • Character References: Applicants typically needed to provide character references from individuals who could attest to their suitability for carrying a concealed weapon.
  • Application Process: The application process involved submitting all necessary documentation, attending an interview with a state police officer, and paying associated fees.
  • May-Issue Jurisdiction: Maryland is a “shall-issue” state, which means that as long as the applicant meets all of the requirements they will be issued a license.
